Muskogee firefighter Fred Fielder gets over a water barrier while doing water rescue training Monday at River Country Water Park. Muskogee Fire Department is training firefighters in water rescue techniques this week. Assistant Fire Chief John Tipton said firefighters are learning new techniques on how to maneuver obstacles such as logs in the water. He said they also are learning safe ways to walk as a group against the current. Tipton recalled a storm in 2017 when firefighters made 22 rescues in an hour and a half during heavy rains. Jeff Watkins, fire department training officer, said the department is conducting training sessions over six days, with different groups training each day.
